History
For about 500 years, Rajasthan has performed the traditional art of hand block printing on textiles in rich natural hues. The Chhipa people introduced block printing to Jaipur, Rajasthan. This settlement was initially located in Bagru Village, which is now known for its vegetable dye and mud resist (dabu) block prints. Block printing has been passed down through generations of families and communities, and it has spread to other places in recent decades, including Sanganer and Bagru.
In traditional Bagru block printing, the recipes for traditional plant-based dyes are developed within each family and passed down from generation to generation. The colors are determined by the quality of the plants, the water, and the talent and understanding of the printing masters. Colors are blended with AZO-free pigment dyes in more modern techniques of block printing, such as those used in Sanganer.
