Palces to visit in Hassan

Halebidu (Hoysaleswara Temple)

Twin temples dripping with the finest Hoysala carving on earth - 20,000 individual figures, every inch alive. Elephants, lions, dancers, gods, even a miniature scene of a woman removing a thorn from her foot. Morning light makes the stone glow emerald.

Belur (Chennakeshava Temple)

Built in 1117 to celebrate a Hoysala victory. 48 pillars inside, no two alike - one spins, one has a tiny hole you can thread a needle through. The madanika bracket figures are the sexiest sculptures in Indian temple art.

Shravanabelagola

World’s tallest monolithic statue - 58-foot Gomateshwara towering over the town. Climb 700 steps barefoot at sunrise; the view from the top and the sheer scale of the 10th-century statue will silence you.

Mosale Nageshwara & Chennakeshava Temples

Twin miniature Halebidus, 20 minutes from Hassan. Almost no tourists. Perfectly preserved, mirror-image temples with some of the most delicate shilabalika dancers you’ll ever see.

Shettihalli Rosary Church

The “floating church” - a Gothic ruin half-submerged when the Hemavati dam fills. Eerie and beautiful, especially July-October when water laps at the altar. Best at sunset.

Hasanamba Temple

Ancient town temple that opens only once a year (October/November). The rice and flowers left inside last year stay fresh till next opening - locals swear by the miracle.
