The heart of the city. Massive granite walls, museums with 1857 relics, and the exact spot from where Rani Lakshmibai jumped with her horse (damaged leg and all). Evening sound-and-light show in Amitabh Bachchan’s voice is goosebump-inducing. Climb the ramparts for a 360-degree view of Bundelkhand.
The queen’s palace inside the city, now beautifully restored. Arched courtyards, fading frescoes, stained-glass windows, and the quiet sadness of abandoned royalty. The Durbar hall still has original chandeliers; you half-expect the Rani to walk in wearing armour.
Stunning cluster of 18 royal cenotaphs on the lakeside. Intricate Bundelkhand carvings, domes glowing golden at sunset. This is where the Rani performed sati (but chose war instead). Far less crowded than the fort, perfect for quiet reflection.
30 km away, a massive reservoir on the Betwa river. Boating, picnic spots, and the roar of water during monsoon. Come evening, the dam lights up like a necklace across the water. Best off-beat sunset in the region.
A peaceful Catholic church with stunning architecture and beautiful gardens. Annual feast in October draws thousands across faiths. The silence inside is a sharp contrast to the noisy streets outside.
Technically not Jhansi district, but the road is so quick that locals treat it as their backyard. Ram Raja temple where Lord Ram is king, not god; soaring cenotaphs reflecting in the Betwa; palaces that look like they’re floating. Day trip mandatory.
