Fair & Festival celebrate in Kathmandu

Dashain

Nepal's biggest celebration is the result of family reunions, the classic child's game of kite flying, and being blessed by our elders with Tika (a blessing of flour and Holy Water on our forehead.) In the city of Kathmandu, the streets are filled with processions, swings, and getting together to eat. The atmosphere of the city becomes very calm and allows visitors an authentic glimpse into Nepali family structure and cultural customs.
 

Tihar (Festival of Lights)

Tihar, (which is also called Deepawali), is a  five-day festival remembering animals, marking the relationship between sisters and brothers, and is full of colorful decoration Rangoli, lights and music. During Tihar, there is beautiful decorated lights and luminaries .  If you are visiting in Kathmandu, you can either be a part of your neighbor's Tihar festivities or enjoy some sort of cultural performance. The festival is very joyful and inclusive of all people, and is very memorable for a visitor to Kathmandu.

Indra Jatra

Indra Jatra is an 8-Day festival in Newar culture, which takes place in September each year, that honors the rain god with dance, parades of the chariot, and the Kumari (living goddess) walks through Durbar Square. This spectacular festival displays the vibrance of society, traditional musical instruments, and performers with unique acrobatics. If you get to Kathmandu during this festival, it will truly bring life to the cultural centre of the city.
 

Holi

Frolicsome, Holi is known for its vibrant colors splashed around each other. A colorful vibe made even better by sweet treats and music. The festival creates an atmosphere where social barriers are broken down by splashing water and colorful powder on each other. People should participate responsibly by coming to public areas such as Thamel or Durbar Square, where locals can join in the festivities with visitors while still having fun.
 

Gai Jatra (Cow Festival)

Families who have lost loved ones over the past year participate in humorous processions with cows or children dressed up in costume. It combines a sense of humor, music, and remembrance. Streets within Kathmandu will be filled with creative floats and performances, as well, providing a unique way for all travelers to learn about Newar customs surrounding grief and joy.
 

Buddha Jayanti

Celebrating the birth, enlightenment, and passing of Lord Buddha, this day is seen as an important day for practicing Buddhists around the world, including Nepal. Monks will be chanting, while devotees are offering flowers at various stupas like Boudhanath and Swayambhunath. The peace and serenity of the Buddhist sites make it a spiritually enriching experience for all travelers, no matter their religious background or beliefs.
