Fair & Festival celebrate in Kausani

Uttarayani Mela

Massive fair in nearby Bageshwar. Thousands sing, dance, trade horses on the riverbank. Kausani villages empty out for the day, join the procession with folk drums and mountain bagpipes.

Nanda Devi Raj Jat

Epic pilgrimage from Kausani villages to the high meadows. Thousands carry the goddess in a palanquin for 20 days. Even if you miss the full yatra, local celebrations are wild.

Harela (July-August)

Kumaoni new year. People sow seven grains in baskets, plant trees, dance in courtyards. Homestays invite guests to join the feasts, green everywhere, hope in the air.

Basant Panchami

Yellow is the colour, women wear it, fields of mustard bloom, Saraswati puja in every home. Kausani celebrates quietly with kites and yellow sweets.

Diwali & Bhai Dooj

Homes light hundreds of diyas along stone walls. The entire ridge twinkles like a second sky. Sisters tie threads on brothers’ wrists at sunrise, simple, heartfelt mountain version.

Local Village Jagar

Throughout the year, especially winters. Night-long musical storytelling to invoke mountain deities. Drums, trance dancing, possessed singers, raw, powerful, and open to respectful visitors who bring warmth rather than cameras.
