Palces to visit in Khajuraho

Western Group

The postcard stars: Lakshmana, Kandariya Mahadeva, Vishvanatha and Devi Jagadambi temples in one manicured garden. Morning light makes the carvings glow; evening sound-and-light show narrates their story in Amitabh Bachchan’s voice. Ticket ₹40 Indian, ₹600 foreign (includes same-day entry to Eastern & Southern groups).

Kandariya Mahadeva Temple

The tallest and most magnificent, dedicated to Shiva. 84 mini spires, over 900 statues, and the famous mithuna couples that look like they’re still enjoying themselves after a millennium. The interior sanctum is dark, cool and humbling.

Lakshmana Temple

One of the oldest and best preserved. Stunning frieze of soldiers, elephants, hunters and lovers running around the entire base. The doorway carving of Vishnu’s Varaha avatar rescuing the earth is a masterpiece.

Devi Jagadambi Temple

Originally Vishnu, now houses a beautiful black Devi image. The lower band of carvings is the most sensuous in Khajuraho (apsaras applying makeup, lovers in tight embraces). Smaller, less crowded, perfect for slow admiration.

Chitragupta Temple

Unique sun-god temple with a lively three-headed Surya driving his chariot. Outside: marching armies, hunting scenes, and some of the boldest erotic panels. Inside: restored 11th-century statue still wearing its original polish.

Eastern Group (Jain temples & old village)

Peaceful cluster of 2nd-century Jain temples still in worship. Parsvanatha and Adinatha have exquisite yakshi figures and surprisingly modern-looking sculptures. Walk through the quiet village lanes; buy brass souvenirs from the same families who supplied the temples.
