Things to do in Mandawa

Sunrise fresco walk with a local painter

Start at 6 a.m. with a cup of masala chai while the town is still asleep. A descendant of the original artists (many still live here) will show you hidden panels the tour groups never see and explain why Lord Vishnu is sometimes painted holding a gun.

Stay in a haveli

Book a room in Vivaana, Desert Resort, or Castle Mandawa. Falling asleep under hand-painted gods while desert wind rattles the wooden shutters is something you’ll brag about for years. Wake up to peacocks screaming on the roof.

Camel cart ride through surrounding villages

Leave the painted town behind and rattle along sandy tracks to tiny hamlets where frescoes are still being touched up for weddings. Kids chase the cart, women peek from doorways, and the silence is so complete you hear the camel chewing.

Shop for Kundan jewellery and lac bangles in the old bazaar

The same families who traded with Central Asia still sit cross-legged in tiny shops. Bargain hard, drink the sweet tea they offer, and walk away with meenakari earrings that cost less than your airport coffee.

Eat Rajasthani thali on a charpoy under the stars

Most haveli hotels set up candlelit dinners on rooftops, dal baati churma, gatte ki sabzi, ker sangri, and enough ghee to make you glow. The cold desert air and a million stars make it taste better than any Michelin restaurant.

Watch the sunset from the abandoned stepwell

Just outside town lies a crumbling baoli nobody visits. Climb down the ancient steps, sit quietly as the sky turns tangerine, and listen to bats waking up. For twenty minutes you’ll have a 300-year-old monument completely to yourself.
