After breakfast, we proceeded to Amber Fort which is about 12 kms away. from Jaipur. It was the ancient capital of the Kachhuaha Rajput rulers. This unique wonder is a must on every Rajasthan tourism plan. The construction of the fort palace was started in 1592 by Maharaja Man Singh, the Rajput commander of Akbar’s army. It was later expanded by Jai Singh, before they moved their capital to Jaipur.
The fort is an example of magnificent Rajput architecture, beautifully situated on a hill and overlooking a lake. You will really appreciate the climb to the palace on the back of the brightly dressed elephants. We will visit the various rooms and hallways of this palace which is famous for its design and decoration.
In the afternoon, we proceeded to the city’s iconic structures. First came Jantar Mantar, a magnificent stone observatory, built by Raja Jaya Singh in 1728 known for his passion for astronomy. The Jaipur lookout is the largest and best preserved of the five he built, the other four being located in Delhi, Varanasi, Ujjain and Muthura.
We then visited the opulent City Palace, a former royal residence, built in a combination of Rajasthani and Mughal styles. The castle contains magnificent museums showcasing an excellent collection of miniature paintings, traditional costumes and armaments.
Later, we drove past the charming Hawa Mahal (Wind Palace), which is one of Jaipur’s major landmarks. Built in 1799, the five-storey building is a stunning example of Rajput art. It was originally built to allow the ladies of the royal household to watch daily life and processions in the city.
After breakfast, we drove to Udaipur via Chittorgarh.
Built by the local Mauryan rulers (often confused with the imperial Mauryan rulers) in the 7th century AD, the fort of Chittorgarh in Rajasthan is one of the largest cities in India. Chittorgarh Fort, popularly known as Chittoor, situated majestically on a 590 feet high hill and spread over 692 acres of land is a fine example of the popular Rajput architecture.
This impressive fort structure has many gateways built by later Maurya family rulers. Chittorgarh Fort was formerly the capital of Mewar and is now located in the city of Chittorgarh. The Chittorgarh Fort resonates with tales of heroism and sacrifice and showcases Rajput culture and values in the truest sense. Due to its magnificent buildings, Chittorgarh Fort was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013.
There is a 1 km long road leading to the Chittorgarh fort and is quite steep. It is often considered a matter of national pride as there is a lot of historical sacrifice associated with it. The Chittorgarh Fort is also known as the Water Fort as it had 84 water bodies once upon a time, but now only 22 of them remain. The two main attractions of the fort are the Vijay Stamba and Kirti Stamba towers. Vijay Stamba refers to the Tower of Victory and Kirti Stamba means the Tower of Fame.
The towers are lit up at night and it looks even more beautiful. Apart from the towers, there are many palaces and temples within the premises of the fort, the most prominent of which is the Mera Temple.
Later continue your journey towards Udaipur, check into hotel & overnight at leisure.
After breakfast at the hotel, we started our day’s program with a visit to the famous and iconic City Palace, the most visited location in all of Udaipur. It is located along the eastern shore of Lake Pichola.
This truly beautiful and imposing palace is also the largest palace complex in the entire state of Rajasthan and its construction was started by Maharaja Udai Singh II, the founder of the city of Udaipur (around 1568 AD).
Actually a conglomeration of buildings, (like other small palaces and mansions, added to by successive rulers over the next 300 years), it still manages to maintain an impressive uniformity of design. The castle is punctuated by ornate balconies, towers and cupolas, and there are beautiful views over the lake and the city from the upper terrace.
The main part of the palace is now preserved as a museum that houses a collection of music, glass and mirror work, decorative tiles, rare miniature paintings, fine sculptures, as well as an armory section, displaying an impressive array of ancient weapons and fighting implements of Rajput warriors.
Another unique and alluring feature of the town is the ‘Lake Palace Hotel’, located on Jagnewas Island in Pichola Lake. This incredible building, with a very magical construction, seems to be floating in the middle of a lake. It was built by Maharaja Jagat Singh II in 1754 AD, and it officially serves as the summer palace for the royal family of Udaipur. It was later converted into a luxury vacation residence-as well as a resort, and it is now recognized to be considered one of the greatest hotels in the world.
In addition to the main attractions above, we will also find two other interesting locations:
Sahilion-ki-Bari, or the ‘Garden of Honorary Assistants’ located to the north of the city. This small and beautiful ornamental garden features fountains, kiosks, marble elephants and a breathtaking lotus pond.
The Jagadish Temple, located just 150 meters north of the city palace, is a good example of the Indo-Aryan architectural style. It was built by Maharaja Jagat Singh in 1651 AD. It introduces a black stone image of Vishnu, as ‘Jagannath’, the Lord of the Universe.
Traditional folklore espouses the belief that the famous rulers of Mewar came from what is believed to be the oldest ruling dynasty in the world, spanning over 76 generations..!!
A leisurely stroll was planned at the end of the evening around Lake Pichola to soak in the breathtaking charm and mesmerizing atmosphere of this beautiful city.
After breakfast, drive to Mount Abu, on the way to visit Ranakpurjayan Temples which is a very beautiful Ranakpur complex, one of the largest and most important Jain temples in all of India. It is located in a remote valley of the Aravali mountains and is certainly worth a look.
The main temple is the ‘Chaumukha’ temple or the ‘four-faced’ temple, dedicated to Adinath, one of the 24 ‘Thirtankaras’, in and of the lineage of past spiritual masters and teachers who had laid down the philosophical proponents of Jainism.
Built in 1439 AD, this massive, brilliantly crafted and well-maintained marble temple has 29 halls supported by 1444 pillars, each of which is unique in its design and execution and you don’t have two pillars alike! There are two more Jain temples in the complex as well as the ‘Sun Temple’ and a little away, the ‘Amba Mata Temple’.
After lunch continue to Mount Abu check in at the hotel. An evening visit to Sunset Point in Mount Abu, located near the Nakki Lake region of Rajasthan, is a popular attraction that offers breathtaking views of the Aravalli hills bathed in golden hues as the sun sets.
It’s easily accessible via a short walk or horseback ride, making it a favorite spot for families and couples alike. The area also has local vendors selling snacks and souvenirs, adding a lively atmosphere to the wonderful experience.
After breakfast, continue the tour visiting Mount Abu The temples of Delwara, located about 3 km from Mount Abu, were mainly built by Vastupal and Tejpal, between the 11th and 13th centuries AD. The Delwara Temple includes five equally fascinating temples namely- Vimal Vasahi, Luna Vasahi, Pitalhar, Parshavanatha and Mahavir Swami Temple dedicated to Lord Adinath, Lord Rishabhdev, Lord Neminath, Lord Mahavir Swamy and Lord Parshvanath respectively.
Nakee Lake Located just south of Nakee Lake in Mount Abu, Todd’s Rock is a large rock that looks like a toad about to jump into the lake waters. Known as the mascot of Mount Abu, it is one of the most frequented places on the itinerary of all visitors. To see the panoramic beauty of the surrounding lake and the green hilly area you can climb the rock and catch the breathtaking view.
The Arboda Devi Temple is considered the holiest pilgrimage site on Mount Abu and stands as a testimony to the rich architectural heritage of Rajasthan. Legend has it that the ‘Adhar’ of the goddess fell and it was found hanging in the air due to which the temple is also known as Adhar Devi temple. Arboda Devi is considered to be an incarnation of Katyayani Devi.
After breakfast, we drove down first to Pushkar on our way, stopping at AJMER, which is just 11 kms away. of Pushkar city.
Ajmer, a city that flourished on the banks of the Anna Sagar, has always been a city of strategic and historical importance, since the time of Muhammad of Ghori who plundered it, at least once, on his periodic and plundering expeditions from Afghanistan. Much later, and from the time of the Mughal emperor Humayun, it became the favorite residence of the ruling Mughals.
It is noteworthy that one of the first contacts between the Mughals and the British took place in Ajmer, when Sir Thomas Roe, the British envoy, met Emperor Jahangir here in 1616.
Today, Ajmer is a world-famous pilgrimage center for Muslims (as well as for people of other faiths) who visit the Sufi shrine of Sant Moinuddin Chasti, who came to Ajmer from Persia in 1192 AD. He is also popularly known as ‘Hazrat Khawaja Garib Nawaz’, shortened to ‘Haqgan’, which is often found written on transport vehicles owned by Muslims.
This ‘dergah’ (=maqam) has the distinction of being the most visited Muslim shrine in the whole world and it is recorded that the reigning Emperor Akbar used to make a pilgrimage to this place every year, during the annual ‘ars’ held to mark the death anniversary of the saint.
Pushkar
Pushkar, a small charming town, is located on the edge of the desert and it is separated from Ajmer by the ‘Nag Pahar’ or ‘Snake Mountain’.
The town is perhaps best known for its annual camel fair, a large congregation of camels, bulls and cattle that takes place on the full moon night of the Hindu calendar month ‘Kartik’.
Another special feature of the town is the ‘Brahma Temple’, said to be one of the only temples in the world, dedicated to ‘Brahma’, the creator and God of the universe. It is marked by a red tower, and above the entrance, is ‘Hans’, (=a swan, the symbol of Brahma), who is said to have personally chosen Pushkar as his site and location.
