Fair & Festival celebrate in Joshimath

Winter Badrinath Opening

When the temple doors reopen after six months, Joshimath erupts. The idol is carried from Narsingh Temple to Badrinath in a grand procession. Brass bands, flowers, army helicopters shower petals.

Badrinath Closing Ceremon

Lord Vishnu returns to Joshimath. Thousands line the roads with diyas. Emotional, colourful, cold and absolutely unforgettable.

Nanda Devi Raj Jat

Once-in-a-lifetime 280-km pilgrimage from Nauti village through Joshimath to Homkund. Thousands of villagers, horn players, a four-horned ram. Epic doesn’t begin to describe it.

Basanti Puja

Nine-day celebration at Narsingh Temple with folk dances, night-long bhajans and local delicacies. Spring flowers everywhere.

Losar (Tibetan New Year, Feb)

Joshimath’s small Tibetan community celebrates with dragon dances, momos and prayers at the monastery near the market. Warm and welcoming.

Makar Sankranti Mela

Kite flying, sesame-jaggery sweets, bonfires and the first ski festival in Auli. The mountains feel festive even in peak winter.
