Palces to visit in Ladakh

Pangong Lake

That lake from 3 Idiots. 160 km from Leh, 4,250 m high, changes colour from turquoise to ink blue depending on the sun. Camp on the shore, wake up to reflections so perfect you’ll question reality. Permits needed, nights freeze, memories last forever.

Nubra Valley & Hunder sand dunes

Cross Khardung La (5,359 m, once called world’s highest motorable pass), drop into a green valley with double-humped Bactrian camels wandering white dunes against black mountains. Diskit monastery’s giant Buddha watches over it all. Surreal doesn’t cover it.

Thiksey Monastery

Looks like a mini Potala Palace stacked on a hill above the Indus. Dawn prayers at 6 am, monks blowing 10-foot horns, butter tea, chanting that vibrates in your ribs. Best monastery experience in Ladakh, hands down.

Hemis Monastery

Biggest and richest gompa in Ladakh, hidden in a side valley. Home to the famous Hemis festival masked dances. Even on normal days the museum has 1,000-year-old thangkas and a peaceful energy that makes you whisper without meaning to.

Lamayuru Monastery & Moonland

80 km west of Leh, the monastery sits on what looks like the surface of the moon, eroded cliffs in yellows and greys. Walk the ridge at sunset; it feels like standing on another planet while monks chant inside ancient walls.

Tso Moriri Lake

Higher (4,595 m) and quieter than Pangong. Wild, protected, fewer tourists. Kyagar Tso’s little brother but twice as beautiful. Camp with Changpa nomads, spot kiang (Tibetan wild ass), sleep under the densest Milky Way you’ll ever see.
