Things to do in Ladakh

Ride the Manali-Leh highway on a Royal Enfield

Two days of high passes, broken tarmac, waterfalls on the road, army canteens serving free chai. Every biker’s pilgrimage. Your butt will hate you, your soul will thank you.

Sleep one night in a homestay at 4,000 m

Stay with a Ladakhi family in a village like Ulley or Takmachik. Eat homemade thukpa, drink gur-gur chai, learn to say “Jullay”. The warmth inside the house beats any five-star hotel.

Attend morning prayers in a monastery

Wake at 5 am, wrap yourself in blankets, sit among monks while butter lamps flicker and horns echo. You don’t need to be Buddhist to feel something shift inside your chest.

River raft the Zanskar

Grade III-IV rapids in a canyon so deep the sun disappears for hours. Frozen river in winter, raging turquoise in summer. Best white-water in India, hands down.

Trek to the base of Stok Kangri at night for sunrise

No climbing permit needed to reach 5,000 m camp. Start at midnight, headlamps only, reach as the first light hits 6,000 m peaks. Hard, cold, life-changing.

Stargaze at Hanle or Mahe

Some of the darkest skies on earth. Indian Astronomical Observatory is here for a reason. Lie on your back at 4,500 m; the Milky Way is so bright you can read by it.
