Things to do in Mandi

Wake up for the sunrise aarti at Bhutnath

5:30 a.m. in winter, 6:30 in summer. The temple is half-empty, the priests sing like they mean it, and the first rays hit the shivling exactly when the conch blows.

Walk the heritage trail with a local storyteller

Old wooden houses, hidden temples, secret courtyards. Guides from the bazaar (₹500-800) know which door to knock for homemade rhododendron sherry.

Raft down the Beas

Grade II-III rapids from Pandoh to Mandi. April-June best flow. ₹1200-1800 per person. Cold water, warm sun, mountains sliding past.

Eat a proper Mandi dham at a wedding hall

Red rice, mahni daal, khatta meat, teliya mah - slow-cooked by botis (traditional cooks). Ask any local; they’ll invite you to the next feast.

Drive to Barot Valley for a night

70 km of apple orchards and trout streams. Stay in forest rest house, fish your dinner, fall asleep to the Uhl river.

Shop for handmade shawls in the old bazaar

Pashmina is so fine it passes through a ring, Kullu caps, and silver jewellery. Bargain sweetly, drink kangra tea, become friends with the shopkeeper.
