The Kumbh Mela, held every 12 years, is the biggest religious event in Prayagraj. Crores of devotees participate in it and take a dip in the Sangam. For every devotee visiting Prayagraj, taking a dip in the Triveni Sangam is an essential religious act. Puja-path and hevan are organized here on special festivals. The puja conducted by the pandits gives a feeling of spiritual peace and religious virtue.
The Aarti performed on the banks of the Sangam at dusk is a very divine sight. The entire atmosphere becomes devotional with the light of lamps, chanting of mantras and the sound of bells. Devotees light lamps and float them in the river, which is called ‘Deepdaan’.
There is a tradition of doing religious circumambulation around the Sangam during Magh Mela and other festivals in Prayagraj. Devotees complete this circumambulation with fasting, fasting and bhajan-kirtan. It is considered a means of religious practice and spiritual purification.
