How to reach Thimphu

Paro International Airport is the closest major airport to downtown Thimphu and is approximately 50km (30 miles) from the city centre; it is the only international airport in Bhutan offering direct flights from Dhaka and various cities throughout the Indian subcontinent including Delhi and Bangkok. From Paro, travellers can take a taxi or public bus for approximately 1 hour to get to Thimphu.

Road access to Thimphu from Paro, as well as from towns in India, is quite good. Visitors entering Bhutan at Phuentsholing will experience an enchanting 5-6 hour via vehicle (bus/taxi) to Thimphu, through one of nature's most breathtaking mountain passes and valleys; public buses and taxis regularly operate across Bhutan providing safe and comfortable overland travel options for visitors.

The Rail Transport System in Bhutan does not currently have regular rail service; New Jalpaiguri (located in West Bengal) is the closest rail road terminal. Travellers will need to transport from New Jalpaiguri to Phuentsholing by road before continuing to Thimphu via taxi or bus. The overland trip following your rail journey will provide for a magnificent view of the Himalayas.
