Thimphu
Tashichho Dzong is an impressive monastery-fortress that is the administrative center for Bhutan and also functions as a religious authority. This building has beautiful gardens around it, stunning architecture, and is one of the major spiritual sites of Thimphu.
The large statue of Buddha Dordenma located in Thimphu Valley is the second largest Buddha statue in the world. It was constructed by His Majesty King Jigme Singye Wangchuck to inspire peaceful living among all people. Because of its location on a hill overlooking the Thimphu valley, the view from the statue of the valley below is breathtaking.
Motithang Takin Preserve is where we can find the national animal of Bhutan, the takin. This small nature preserve gives us access to see these interesting animals within their natural habitat, making it an enjoyable experience as well as educational.
The Folk Heritage Museum allows us to see what life was like in rural Bhutan, including examples of old houses, farming equipment, and displays about the daily lives of the people living there. This exhibition allows us to appreciate the rich cultural history and traditions of the people of Bhutan.
The Thimphu Weekend Market is a busy place for local people to sell fresh food, handmade crafts and other local products. The market has a lively atmosphere, making it an excellent opportunity to experience Bhutanese culture, food and the everyday life of the local people.
The site is a historical memorial for the nation's third king, and is popular with locals, who visit daily to pray and reflect. In addition, the traditional white stupa and gold tipped spires of the building create a spiritually uplifting experience for visitors.
